Maria Shamoon, a Christian assistant commissioner in Balochistan, Pakistan, was briefly kidnapped during violent attacks conducted by Baloch rebel groups on Jan. 31.

The attacks occurred in different parts of Balochistan, including Noshki city. Armed militants attacked government offices and security forces to create fear and stop the government from working in the area. During this unrest, Deputy Commissioner Noshki Mohammad Hussain Hazara and Assistant Commissioner Maria Shamoon were taken hostage.

The kidnapping was meant to stop government officers from serving the people of Noshki. However, the plan failed. The Pakistan Army and Frontier Corps quickly started a security operation and took control of the area. Both officers were rescued safely and returned home.

The attacks caused heavy loss of life. Security forces, police, and civilians, including women and children, were killed. Many of the victims were local Baloch people. The violence showed how rebel groups continue to spread chaos in the province by targeting the state and innocent people.

After her rescue, Shamoon released a video message. She thanked God for protecting her during the attack. She also thanked the Pakistan Army and Frontier Corps for acting quickly and saving her life.

She said the attackers tried to stop her from serving the people of Noshki, but failed. She made it clear that she will continue her work and will not be afraid.

“I will keep serving the people of Balochistan under all conditions,” she said.
