ICC Releases Report Highlighting Mauritania’s Complex Religious Freedom

5/14/2025 Mauritania (International Christian Concern) — In a newly released country brief, International Christian Concern (ICC) explores the nuanced and often overlooked reality of religious freedom in Mauritania, one of the few countries in the world where apostasy from Islam is punishable by death. The report examines the legal, cultural, and social factors shaping the Christian experience in a nation where open worship is rare and conversion is considered taboo.
Despite its stark legal codes, Mauritania remains a country full of contradictions. How do Christians worship under the radar? What role does the international community play in shaping the future of religious freedom in this region? ICC’s report goes beyond the headlines to uncover the surprising complexities at play — and the quiet courage of those living out their faith.
Joseph Daniel, who wrote the brief, previously served as ICC’s regional manager for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). He has spent most of his life living, working, and studying in the MENA region. He has on-the-ground experience leading relief, development, ministry, and human rights initiatives in Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Turkey, and Armenia.
