DRC’s President Visits Violence-Stricken East

12/11/2023 DRC (International Christian Concern) — As the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) anticipates its upcoming presidential elections in the end of December, current president Felix Tshisekedi visited the war-torn eastern portion of the country as he addressed a group of thousands in Goma.

Goma, along with much of the northeastern border of the DRC, is primarily controlled by rebel groups – including M23 and the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) alongside more than 120 others. Officials rarely travel to the region due to the extreme lack of security and general hatred towards the government.

Tshisekedi took a great risk traveling to the region and openly speaking out against the rebel groups dominating the area, specifically M23. As the election approaches, many call for the removal of peacekeeping efforts in the east, calling them “toothless” and “ineffective.” Tshisekedi said, “The United Nations came to help and protect the Congolese people, but it didn’t work.”

Many Congolese hope their government will be more effective in addressing the many rebellions despite the country’s lack of stability, financial resources, and military might.

The DRC boasts one of the largest Christian populations in the country, with approximately 98% of their population identifying as practicing one form of Christianity. Christians are particularly vulnerable to the violence conducted by militant groups, as many of the groups strike because of their differences from much of the population.

M23 rebels are predominantly Tutsi’s from Rwanda and strike against the Christian population of the DRC for their lack of acceptance following the Rwandan genocide through modern day. ADF rebels are affiliated with the Islamic State and conduct their violence solely against Christians as a result of their extremist beliefs.

Tshisekedi’s visit to the eastern region is encouraging as it demonstrates his passion for the Christian population and his willingness to risk his well-being for the sake of his people.

We pray that Tshisekedi will continue to fight for Christians and work with foreign governments to promote religious freedom, security, and prosperity for his people. We pray that the Lord would use all that is being done in the DRC for the good of his kingdom.
