05/31/2021 Turkey (International Christian Concern) –  A Greek orphanage in Turkey is nearing collapse as a result of delayed restoration work. The 19^th-century orphanage is listed by the World Monuments Fund as one of the most endangered heritage sites in the world. The Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate currently holds the title deed to the orphanage, as a result of a 2010 European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decision.

The Greek orphanage building was set for restoration beginning September 2020. However, no work has yet been completed on the structure. The roof and corner of the building suffered severe damage in a 1980 fire.

Turkey has demonstrated its disinterest in preserving minority Christian heritage sites. Looting of historic churches is common as treasure hunters have seen their crimes go unpunished and historic places of worship have been left to crumble without government protection. Land and churches belonging historically to minority Christian groups like Syriacs, Armenians and Greeks also face damages.
