Sudan Protest Groups Name Civilian Prime Minister, Takes First Steps Since Deal Agreed
08/16/2019 Sudan (International Christian Concern) – Sudan’s Forces for Freedom and Change and other parties have agreed on a civilian Prime Minister to run the new government, after the they transitioned away from the dictatorial reign of Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted in April. Dr. Abdullah Hamdok, who was previously a UN Economist, has been agreed upon by all of the opposition party members and the protesters. This is a big move forward as there has not been a civilian prime minister in Sudan for more than 30 years, the length of Bashir’s dictatorship.
With this agreement, they have moved forward on the deal that was agreed upon between the Transitional Military Council and the protesters, moving to a civilian government. This deal is supposed to be signed on Sunday, and then Dr. Hamdok would be sworn in as Prime Minister. If this takes place, it could be a huge jump forward for democracy and peace in a country that has seen violence and oppression for decades.
For Christians, it could mean more religious freedom and a chance to change the culture and government in the Future. This would likely take years, but it is far more than they have had hope for since Bashir took over. Please continue to pray for peace and stability in Sudan.
