Syria’s Al-Hasakah Faces Significant Drop in Christian Population
ICC Note: According to a report by the Syriac Cultural Association, seven thousand Christians left their homes in Syria’s al-Hasakah governorate because of the attacks of extremists in 2015. Today, it is estimated that only 5% of the Christian population remains in this area. Many Syrian Christians have no desire to return home. During the past eight years of civil war, Syria’s Christians have been battered by all sides and targeted for violence.
08/06/2018 Syria (Iraq Akhbar) – Soumi , the administrative director of the Syriac Cultural Association in Syria, confirmed that 7000 Christians had left their homes in Tel Tamar and Hassakeh due to attacks in 2015.
Sami spoke about the situation of Christians in Al-Hasakah governorate during the crisis “Christians in Syria in general and the north of the country, especially in the year 2015, have been subjected to a fanatic attacks in Tal Tamer and its villages.”
He added that “15 of the 33 villages were completely destroyed in the area of Tel-pass also destroyed churches in those villages,” noting that “90% of the Assyrian people fled from Tel Tamar.”
The director of the Syriac Cultural Society also said that the armed groups “burned a Christian village completely in the countryside of Qahtaniyah district of Qamishli”, stressing that “Christians have been subjected to a lot of massacres during the period of attacks on the region.”
On the situation of Christians in the current time, said Sumy that “the situation of Christians improved after the expulsion of gunmen urged from the region and unite all the Kurdish, Christian and Arab forces with each other.”
As for the number of Christians who fled the area, he said that “7,000 Christians left their homes in Tel Tamar and Hassakeh in the wake of attacks in 2015,” noting that “5% of the Assyrians are currently in the area of Tel Tamar.
