The Refugee Crisis You’ve Never Heard About

While much of the news surrounding the refugee situation and in Myanmar has focused on Rohingya Muslims, hundreds of thousands of refugees, among whom many are Christians have faced decades of persecution and displacement along the Thai and Chinese borders. In an article appropriately titled “Myanmar’s Forgotten Refugees,” The Diplomat focuses on the Karen people, many of who are hiding in Thailand. These refugees are denied the right to travel outside the camp. Many hoped the administration of Aung San Suu Kyi would bring peace with Myanmar’s ethnic and religious minorities, but so far, it has escalated tensions.

Some 100,000 refugees living in the nine refugee camps along the border face a difficult decision; to return to fragile peace in Myanmar or continue living in the camps with no citizenship, legal protection, and declining rations.
To further complicate their situation, many can’t be reunited with their families who moved to the United States under a UNHCR mass resettlement program, because all refugee admissions programs have been suspended under President Donald Trump.
