ICC Note:

A couple from Hong Kong who run an addiction center in China have been taken into police custody. Although a reason has not been given, church members believe it is because of their participation in religious activities. Authorities from the religious affairs bureau confiscated computers and religious materials from the Gospel Drug Treatment Center. In the three years the center has run, it has helped more than 180 people in its drug addiction treatment program. China has recently cracked down on all religious activity to the point that even leaders of small house churches have been detained for “gathering a crowd to disturb public order.”

12/5/2016 China (China Aid) – Two Hong Kong residents who established addiction treatment centers disappeared into police custody in China’s southern Guangdong province last weekend.

On Nov. 26 and 27, officials from the public security and religious affairs bureaus surrounded Gospel Drug Treatment Church, confiscated its computer and religious materials, banned it from holding religious services and dispersed Christians gathered there. Around the same time, the church’s leaders, Lin Haixin and his wife, who are originally from Hong Kong, were detained, with their current situation unknown. However, some Christians speculate that they were taken away for holding so-called “illegal religious activities” without registering.

For two consecutive days, church members attempted to contact the couple, who both hold Hong Kong residency, but could not reach them.
