ICC Note: Troops from the Nigerian Army recently reported that they rescued 88 people while carrying out a clearing operation in the northeast area of Borno State. These people were rescued from villages where they were plagued by attacks from Boko Haram, the Islamist terrorist group based in north eastern Nigeria that the Army is attempting to eradicate. Boko Haram has been active in Nigeria since 2009, killing thousands and displacing millions, particularly targeting Christians as they attempt to establish an Islamic caliphate in the northeast.

08/16/2016, Borno, Nigeria (Premium Times) – Troops on clearance operations in the North-East have rescued 88 people in Bama Local Government Area of Borno and killed three during an encounter.

A statement signed by Sani Usman, acting director, Army Public Relations, in Abuja on Tuesday, said 28 of those rescued claimed they escaped from Bula Musa village.

Mr. Usman said the people comprised two men, nine women and 17 children, adding that the troops killed three terrorists during separate encounter.

“They have been taken to Bama town for screening, profiling and possible handover to emergency management and humanitarian agencies,” Mr. Usman said.
