Community Rejects Church Construction in Kapur Village
7/23/2025 Indonesia (International Christian Concern) — Another case of intolerance toward Christians has emerged in Indonesia, this time in West Kalimantan Province.
A group of residents circulated a letter rejecting a plan to build a church in their village of Kapur. The letter was written on July 8 and addressed to the leader of the village.
The letter was a follow-up to the church’s request for a building permit for the construction of the church. The reason for the rejection was to maintain harmony and peace in the predominantly Muslim community.
Stephanus Paiman, chair of the Pontianak Humanitarian Volunteer Forum (FRKP), appealed to the people of West Kalimantan to remain calm and restrained.
“Let’s entrust this matter to the Kubu Raya Regency Government, as the Regency Government has undoubtedly already established policies to ensure everyone remains safe and peaceful,” he said. “Let’s trust the government, which remains committed to promoting tolerance.”
Two weeks before this incident, the West Kalimantan Government, through Deputy Governor Krisantus Kurniawan, had expressed the governor and deputy governor’s goal of making West Kalimantan the most tolerant province.
“A sense of security and tolerance are fundamental,” Kurniawan said. “We will not tolerate any social organizations that disrupt West Kalimantan.”
The Regent of Kubu Raya, Sujiwo, S.E., M.Sos., expressed his firm stance on the letter prohibiting religious activities in Kapur. He stated that this action was not only wrong but also directly contradicted the country’s constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion.
He said he will take firm action against individuals who attempt to disrupt community harmony. He stated that the letter issued by the neighborhood association administrator will be followed up on and further investigated, including the motive and legal basis.
