Thousands of people gathered at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Hamoud, Karak, Jordan on Sunday, as eight of the nine Christians killed in Friday’s attack on the church were laid to rest. The ninth victim, Mohammed al-Qasous, was buried on Monday.

Extra security stood watch as the coffins, each draped in a Jordanian flag, were carried through the crowd gathered at the church. Tributes to the victims are going viral on social media.

The nine men killed were gunned down during another funeral on Oct. 23. Of the 40 other believers who were injured, two remain in critical condition. As many as 200 people were attending the funeral that was attacked.

Jordan’s security forces detained three men on Monday following a shootout in Karak governorate. All three were wounded. No extremist group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and authorities have not disclosed a possible connection to a particular group.

Although Christians account for nearly 3% of Jordan’s mostly Muslim population, Muslims throughout Jordan have expressed solidarity with the country’s minority Christian community. Muslims were also among those injured in the attack.

International Christian Concern (ICC) President Shawn Wright called for justice following the attack.

“Friday’s attack on the Hammoud Church in Jordan is a heinous assault on the universal human right to worship freely,” Wright said. “We stand with those who are mourning following the attack and call for justice to be served, with those responsible to be held accountable through due process.”
