21 of 22 Churches Destroyed in Christian Town Since 2021 Coup
On Jan. 30, the Burma Research Institute (BRI) released a scathing report detailing destructive attacks, killings, and harassment of Christians and church buildings since the military coup in 2021 that forcefully took control of Myanmar.
The report focuses on the persecution of Christians across Chin, Kachin, Karenni, and Karen states, and the Sagaing Region within Myanmar. BRI Board Chairman, the Rev. Dr Robin Stoops, said the Burma Research Institute’s latest report documents the ongoing trauma faced by Christian communities in Burma as persecution by the military junta continues.
Some of the key findings include:
- 21 out of 22 churches in Thantlang Town, a majority-Christian town, have been destroyed and the town’s population displaced since 2021.
- More than 340 churches and Christian buildings were destroyed.
- 149 Christians killed and 218 imprisoned from 2022 to 2025 (according to Open Doors data).
One unnamed church leader still living inside Myanmar testified powerfully that the faithful are now scattered across jungles, remote areas, and informal shelters, struggling to preserve their faith and communal life under constant threat and insecurity.
Yet, in an extraordinary witness of pastoral commitment, most Christian pastors and leaders chose to remain with their people. They continue to share their suffering, offering spiritual consolation, and embodying hope amid despair.
“We need your prayers to free Burma from religious persecution,” an International Christian Concern staffer said. “Please continue to pray for Christians in Myanmar facing dangerous attacks, displacement, and the ongoing authoritarian rule by the military dictatorship.”
