7/1/2025 Indonesia (International Christian Concern) — On June 27, a mob of 200 Muslim residents from Tangkil Village in Cidahu District, Sukabumi Regency, West Java, Indonesia, gathered at a halfway house to disrupt a Christian gathering.

The locals claimed that the house was frequently used as an unauthorized place of Christian worship. Around 1:15 p.m., they demanded that the worship activities be halted.

Inside, several Christian students from Jakarta were conducting a retreat at a villa in Sukabumi. The angry residents forcibly interrupted the retreat, leading security officers to evacuate 36 people to ensure their safety and to prevent further confrontation.

Several facilities were damaged in the attack. The residents damaged windows, a garden, a gazebo, toilets, a motorbike, and the front gate.

Permadi Arya, an anti-intolerance activist, condemned the ongoing acts of intolerance occurring in Indonesia. He asserted that this situation is not about permission, as retreats do not require official approval.

“This is not a matter of permission. Don’t be fooled by the reason for permission,” Arya said. “This is pure Christian phobia, hatred, and fear of Christianity that is allowed by the state, from the era of President Jokowi to President Prabowo now.”

Arya said there has been a lack of attention on the growing intolerance from the government, with no mitigation efforts in place.

“The authorities are never present to ensure freedom of worship for minority groups; this is the reality in Western Indonesia — Indonesia with Christian Phobia,” he said.
