Central Kalimantan Governor Backs Efforts to Rebuild Burned Church
5/21/2025 Indonesia (International Christian Concern) — The governor of Central Kalimantan, Agustiar Sabran, on April 12 laid the first stone for the construction of the Kalimantan Evangelical Church (GKE) Maranatha in Palangka Raya, Borneo, Indonesia. This marked the start of the reconstruction of one of Palangka Raya’s oldest church buildings after it burned down last September.
Before the fire, Christians had worshiped in the church building, located in the middle of Palangka Raya city, for 56 years. Construction of the new Kalimantan Evangelical Church Maranatha is expected to be completed in mid-2026.
Sabran said he is committed to accelerating the reconstruction of the new building to support post-disaster recovery efforts and help meet the spiritual needs of the local community.
“This is more than just physical development,” he said. “This symbolizes the revival, new spirit, and strength of faith of the GKE Maranatha congregation. I appreciate the determination of the congregation and church leaders who continue to move forward even though they have experienced major problems.”
The governor emphasized his commitment to fully support the church construction process, not only morally but also through 40 billion rupiah ($2.5 million) in budget support from the regional government. These funds will also be used to benefit the local community.
