Christians Concerned about New High School Curriculum
8/21/2024 Hong Kong (International Christian Concern) — High school students in Hong Kong will soon see a massive shift in their religious education — and Christian leaders are concerned.
A new 217-page curriculum will soon be introduced, emphasizing national identity, one’s responsibility to the country, being more discerning with media, and abiding by the national laws, among other changes. The new curriculum is for Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Islam, and Taoism studies.
Additionally, the curriculum explicitly references Hong Kong’s Basic Law and the highly controversial National Security Law, introduced in March, which many believe greatly erodes citizens’ religious, political, and social freedoms.
Some Christian and Catholic leaders have publicly expressed concern for the new curriculum. It, they claim, is yet another example of the growing influence on religious people and their lives that the current Hong Kong leaders, backed by Chinese Communist authorities, are increasingly exerting.
