7/12/2024 Indonesia (International Christian Concern) — During his upcoming visit to Indonesia — the world’s largest Muslim country, Pope Francis is expected to deliver a message on the importance of religious tolerance. 

The visit, scheduled for Sept. 3-6, will also include meetings with clergy at the Cathedral Church with interfaith figures at the Istiqlal Mosque to symbolize the unity and collaboration between different religious communities.  

More than 80% of Indonesians are Sunni Muslims, and only about 11% are Christians. While Christians are allowed to worship openly, they often face persecution from Muslims and members of local governments. Muslims who convert to Christianity face even harsher persecution and are often disowned by their families.  

“(He’s) bringing a very strong message about the importance of peace and tolerance,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi said on Tuesday at the State Palace Complex in Jakarta. 

Another highlight of the pope’s visit will be the celebration of Holy Mass on Sept. 5 at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) stadium in Central Jakarta. 

Thousands of Catholics from throughout Indonesia will attend the High Mass, which the pope will preside over. Seventy thousand people from various regions are expected to attend the service.
