Nuns Shut Down Accusations of Terrorism
09/02/2022 Philippines (International Christian Concern) – A group of nuns in the Philippines was accused by the government of violating the country’s anti-terrorism laws and financing the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed branch, the New People’s army.
The sisters denied these allegations, stating on August 30 that their presence in rural communities was part of their mission to help the poor and not intended to spark any kind of violence.
In a statement, the sisters said, “We are not the enemy of the government. We have not aided or helped any terrorist group. Our projects go directly to aid the people.”
The nuns work in rural communities alongside grassroots organizations attempting to empower the poor. They said that those who spread lies about their alleged involvement with terrorist groups only succeeded in making the poor poorer. They lamented the laws that “have been weaponized against us.”
