04/13/2020 Chad/Nigeria (International Christian Concern) – According to reports by the Chadian military, Operation Bomo’s Anger led to the deaths of over 1,000 Boko Haram militants throughout the Lake Chad region. This operation was spearheaded by the Chadian military and came as a reaction to the insurgent attack on Bomo Base in Chad several weeks ago. During the insurgent attack, 92 Chadian soldiers lost their lives and is remembered as the worst Chadian military loss in decades.

Due to this attack, the Chadian government decided to conduct Operation Bomo’s Anger. They used this operation to clear many of the islands and land surrounding Lake Chad. During the operation, the Chadian soldiers reportedly killed many Boko Haram militants, but also lost 52 of their own troops and had another 200 injured. This action is one of the largest clearing actions in the region since the Boko Haram insurgency began.

Since the operation, Chad has now backed out of the regional coalition that was built to destroy the terrorist group. Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon had created a coalition of forces that were meant to defeat Boko Haram. Due to the multiple recent attacks that Chad has suffered and this operation which they were forced to conduct mostly alone, they have decided not to interfere in international operations, but only to protect their own borders. The loss of their military strength and support could be a major blow to continued operations in the region. Chad has one of the most renowned and powerful militaries in West Africa, and Nigeria will likely feel the loss of support.
