08/29/2019 Washington D.C. (International Christian Concern) – The 2008 anti-Christian riots in Kandhamal caused widespread communal violence, destroyed homes and livestock, and displaced 56,000 Christians, many of whom have not been able to return home since. In Koraput, a group of 19 families (70 people) lives under a single roof in order to survive. The families live off of the husbands’ wages as day laborers, because in their culture, it is not customary for women to maintain most jobs.

ICC provided a six-month vocational training for 10 of these women to become seamstresses.

The training will supply them with the necessary education and tools, as well as six months of salary. This will allow these women to work from or near their homes, while also caring for their children. Sewing is also a common occupation amongst Indian women, which will ensure that the local community does not harass them.
