06/29/2019 Libya (International Christian Concern) –  An internal United Nations report leaked to the Irish Times alleges that the bodies of Christians who died in the overcrowded Zintan detention center are not being buried because the local cemetery is only for Muslims.

The report was created after the UN visited the facility on June 3^rd in order to investigate the detention center’s overcrowding and poor housing conditions for refugees and migrants. An estimated 800 detainees were located in the center prior to the visit. Afterwards, 96 were relocated. Tuberculosis is spreading in the facility, prompting concerns about the health of detainees.

It is unknown how many Christians have died in this facility, how many have been refused burial, and how many are currently detained in Zintan. Libya has nearly no local Christian population. Most Christians avoid the country because of it’s violent civil war. Some work in Libya because persecution prevents them from having a good income in their home country. Others flee their home countries because of persecution and are forced to travel through Libya.
