04/01/2019 Brunei (International Christian Concern) – From April 3, the Muslim-majority country in Southeast Asia is set to implement Islamic laws that would allow death by stoning for adultery and homosexuality, despite growing global criticism.

With a population of 430,000, the former British protectorate, will also punish those who commit sodomy, adultery and rape with death by stoning, and theft with amputation.

According to a statement issued last Saturday from the prime minister’s office, the laws, elements of which were first adopted in 2014 and which have been rolled out in phases since then, will be fully implemented this week.

“The (Sharia) Law, apart from criminalizing and deterring acts that are against the teachings of Islam, also aims to educate, respect and protect the legitimate rights of all individuals, society or nationality of any faiths and race,” the statement said.

However, some aspects of the laws will be applicable to non-Muslims.

Brunei is already known as a country that enforces strict Islamic teachings. The sale of alcohol is banned, gambling is prohibited, and evangelism by other religions is forbidden.

Brunei is ranked 36 on Open Doors’ World Watch List. According to the persecution watchdog, “[Brunei] is impacted by the continued introduction of Sharia laws—including Christians who are forced to adhere to Islamic customs and rites.” Also, conversion from Islam is illegal, which results in pressure for Muslim background believers to return to their former faith.

The United Nations, human rights activists from the West have come forth to criticize the country’s latest plans and raised concerns with Brunei.
