Philippine Bishop Vows to Continue His Work Despite Threats
03/01/2019 Philippines (International Christian Concern) – Philippine Bishop Pablo Virgilio David of Caloocan, recently received death threats for his criticism of the government’s war on drugs and has been advised not to return to his residence. However, he has vowed to continue speaking out against Duterte’s anti-drug campaign.
Duterte’s war on drugs has caused more than 20,000 deaths since Duterte came in power in 2016. Bishop Pablo David has been one of the harsh critics from the Catholic Church against Duterte’s campaign, calling it “immoral and unthinkable and so desperate,” and consequently became the victim of unproven accusations made by the president, such as stealing donations and involvement in drug trafficking.
In recent weeks, his phone has been receiving text messages written with intimidating capital letters and menacing tone telling him that he would be next in line for execution. As a result, he had to cancel his plan to receive a human rights award in person on February 26.
When asked if the death threats are tied to his campaign against drug killings, Bishop David told CbcpNews, “your guess is as good as mine.” Yet the outspoken prelate added, “No threat or intimidation can stop me from carrying on with my spiritual and pastoral duties as a bishop”.
