01/31/2019 China (International Christian Concern) – More than a month after the December 9 crackdown of the Autumn Rain Covenant Church (officially translated as “Early Rain Covenant Church”) in Sichuan, eight people have been released on bail, while 14 are still under criminal detention.

The whereabouts of Pastor Wang Yi and Wang’s wife Jiang Rong are still unclear. Wang’s lawyer Zhang Peihong attempted to visit him twice, but was rejected both times. According to him, Wang is most likely detained somewhere in Chengdu.

On January 24, the church sent out another prayer request letter, saying that the crackdown against the church has not stopped, even as the Lunar New Year celebration draws near. On January 23, another sister Zhang Xiaohong from the church was taken away by the police, and immediately put under criminal detention.

Many other members continue to be harassed, followed, or have their homes raided by the police. The authorities would also visit their workplace and ask them to stop gathering. Members who are not of Sichuan origin started to be visited by their hometown officials and are demanded to move back.

China Aid also reports that in the past week, the police have summoned several church members to inquire about Pastor Wang Yi’s financial status. They are asking if Pastor Wang also owns a Mercedes or BMW other than riding his scooter to work for the past decade.

A police said it bluntly, “We want to criminalize Wang Yi. As for others, it will depend on whether or not you want to cooperate with us. If you do, you will be able to go home for Chinese New Year, and nothing will happen to you.”
