10/12/2018 China (International Christian Concern) – In September of 2018, the Vatican signed a “provisional agreement” with China on the appointed bishops, breaking through on an issue that had been going on for decades that thwarted diplomatic relations.

The agreement allowed for the joint-appointment of Chinese bishops, but has not been made public yet.

Vatican spokesperson Greg Burke, told reports that the aim ““is not political but pastoral, allowing the faithful to have bishops who are in communion with Rome but at the same time recognized by Chinese authorities.”

This week, U.S. academic and director of Center for Religious Freedom, Nina Shea said that she fears the forming of diplomatic relations between China and the Vatican would send the wrong message concerning religious freedoms. Although she added that since the agreement has not been made public yet, it’s hard to know exactly what will come of it.
