ICC Note: Church workers are affected by Philippine government’s latest crackdown on suspected militants allegedly conspiring with communist rebels. They have been contacted by state security agents to stop their advocacy work and a 22 year-old youth leader and her family were harassed, threatened, and put under surveillance due to accusation of her being a communist rebel. President Duterte declared recently that he would run after leftist “front organizations” against his government. Yet many of these organizations advocate for human rights and speak up against government’s rights abuse and extrajudicial killings.
