ICC Note:

al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb(AQIM) has released a captive after almost 6 years of being held. The terrorist organization, based in Mali, released a video earlier this year showing that they still held six foreign nationals captive. Stephen McGown, who had been held the longest was released today. This is good news for the rest of the victims as it shows a possibility for their safe return home.

08/03/2017 Mali (News24) – Stephen McGown, a South African who has been held hostage in Mali for more than five years, has been released, it emerged on Thursday.

This was announced by International Relations and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane at a post-Cabinet lekgotla media briefing.
