ICC Note:

A Christian janitor in Khanewal was reportedly abused by a Deputy Commissioner after the Deputy Commissioner ordered his gunman to beat the Christians. According to reports from local newspapers, the order to beat the Christian came after the Deputy Commissioner decided he did not like the state of cleanliness in the hospital where the Christian worked. Discrimination and abuse of Christians, who are often relegated to lower subservient jobs, is quite common in Pakistan. Will the Deputy Commissioner be punished for this public abuse?

05/08/2017 Pakistan (Christians in Pakistan) – Deputy Commissioner Khanewal, Muzafar Khan Siyal, reportedly abused a Christian janitor during his visit to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Khanewal. A Christian janitor named Shakil Masih was allegedly beaten by Commissioner’s gunman which led to protest from the hospital staffers.

Details emerged that on May 1, Commissioner Siyal was quite annoyed with the state of cleanliness at the DHQ hospital and reportedly ordered his gunman to slap the Christian janitor Shakil Masih. Local newspapers detailed that he directed his gunman to “honor the janitor for maintaining cleanliness.”

The Commissioner’s gunman hit Masih and slapped him several times. After the official left, the hospital’s staff staged a protest at the gate of the hospital. The protesters urged the Chief Minister of Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif, to take notice of the incident, and take necessary action in this regard.
