Groups Hold Interfaith Peace Conference in Myanmar

Over the weekend more than a thousand leaders and religious members were scheduled to participate in an interfaith peace conference in Myanmar. Myanmar has been riddled with conflict stemming from tension between a staunchly Buddhist government and religious minority ethnic groups such as the Muslim Rohingya and the Christian Kachin people groups. A conference committee member said “”It is time for religious leaders, government and civil society people to become unified and actively participate in a nation building.” Greater understanding among religions is needed to promote peace and protect the rights of religious minorities in Myanmar.
3/19/2017 Myanmar (UCA News) – Religious leaders in Myanmar will hold an interfaith peace conference against a backdrop of religious violence and sectarian strife.
The “Meeting of interfaith brothers and sisters who coexist forever in Myanmar” is scheduled to be held in Mandalay on March 18. About 1,000 participants from different religions, government officials, union ministers, political parties, civil society groups and ethnic groups are expected to join.
Reverend Zaw Win Aung from the Methodist Church in Mandalay said that people from different religions in Mandalay have lived peacefully together for centuries.
