Compassion International Forced to Close India Operations by Mid-March
ICC Note:
Compassion International will be forced to close its operations in India by mid-March unless the Indian government stops blocking the NGO’s funding to local partners. Last year, India made changes to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act which it used to cut off Compassion’s funding. After repeated attempts to negotiate with the Indian government, Compassion announced that it has exhausted all avenues to try to keep funding its local partners. As of mid-March, the NGO will be forced to close down its India operations, cutting off 147,000 children it supports in India.
02/03/2017 India (Christian Daily) – The Indian government has blocked outside funding to local child development projects, a move that could force Christian child sponsorship group Compassion International to leave the Hindu-majority nation by March.
Last year, Compassion revealed that the changes in India’s Foreign Contribution Regulation Act have hindered it from sending funds to some 500 child development projects inside the country. This means the organization could be forced to stop supporting the 147,000 Indian children it helps, The Christian Post explains.
“We are broken-hearted that the Indian government has put us in a position where we may be forced to close our doors in India,” Compassion president and CEO Santiago “Jimmy” Mellado told the Post in a statement. “We are praying for a solution that allows us to continue working with our 580-plus churches to provide our holistic child development program to more than 147,000 children.”
Compassion previously said the government has already denied foreign funding to 63 of its partners without providing them with an explanation. India has also continued to refuse to give them a reason despite repeated requests.
The child sponsorship organization has been requesting its supporters to ask the U.S. Congress to intervene, but the efforts have resulted in little progress. Should no change come in the following weeks, Mellado said they will be forced to leave India by mid-March.
