Myanmar admits to detaining disappeared priests

Myanmar’s military has finally admitted that they have had two priests in their custody since December 24th. The two priests helped journalists who had traveled to their region to report on the government bombing of local churches. They had reported to the local military to help a young couple which was complaining to the military about the destruction of their house. When the priests arrived, the couple was released and the priests were detained. Many worry about the priests, as torture and brutal treatment have occurred to those detained by the military. The army has accused them of “informers and spreading false news on behalf of the armed insurgents.”
1/23/2017 Myanmar (Morning Star News) – Burma (Myanmar) army officials have confirmed that they arrested two assistant priests missing since Dec. 24 and accused them of aiding ethnic separatists.
The Burma army accused Dom Dawng Nawng Latt and La Jaw Gam Hseng of serving as “informers and spreading false news on behalf of the armed insurgents” in Shan state, the Myanmar News Agency reported on Thursday (Jan. 19), citing a report by the Information Committee of the State Counsellor’s Office.
The state news agency reported that the two clergymen “gave information of the Tatmataw’s [Burma army’s] activities to the armed groups, gave them money and spread rumors to foreign media so as to arouse mistrust of the government among public and international communities.”
