UN Rapporteur visits displaced Christians in Myanmar

A UN Special Rapporteur in Myanmar is visiting internally displaced people (IDP) camps in Myanmar. Ms. Yanghee Lee visited IDPS at Mongna Roman Catholic Church, Mongna Baptist church, and RC Church. The Kachin people are predominantly Christian and have suffered decades of persecution at the hands of a staunchly Buddhist government. While the government is waging war against separatist militias, their attacks often level villages and churches and claim the lives of innocent civilians in what appears to be a strategy to drive out the entire Kachin population rather than suppress separatists.
1/11/2017 Myanmar (Mizzima) – United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Ms Yanghee Lee and delegation met with internally displaced persons in IDP camps in Myitkyina and Waingmaw Townships yesterday morning, state media reported on 11 January.
The special rapporteur and delegation first visited camps in Mongna Baptist Church and Mongna Roman Catholic Church and met with some of the IDPs there.In the afternoon, the special rapporteur visited the IDP camp of RC Church and met with some IDPs separately.
