ICC Note:
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) declared January 8, 2017 as a national day of mourning in honor of Christians murdered in Kaduna. Most of the attacks were orchestrated by Boko Haram. In the same statement, CAN commended Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari for challenging Boko Haram’s rule, but also criticized his silence over Boko Haram’s murder of Christians. CAN president, Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, called for justice on behalf of the dead and compensation for the families. To honor the national day of mourning, Nigerian Christians should wear black to all church services on January 8.
01/01/2017 Nigeria (Vanguard) – The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared January 8 2017 national day of mourning over Southern Kaduna killings.
This came as it commended President Muhammadu Buhari for waging war against Boko Haram fundamentalists since his assumption in office, but decried his silence over the on-going genocide in the last few weeks in Kafanchan, about 12 kilometres north of Godogodo, saying that Buhari’s silence was ‘perceived as official endorsement of the dastardly and ungodly acts.’ Defense of the President’s silence was unacceptable, as the governor was biased in handling of the continuous killings.
These were made known in a statement directed by Rev. Dr. Samson Olasupo A Ayokunle, President CAN and signed by Rev. Dr. Musa Asake, CAN National General Secretary on Friday.
