ICC Note:

For the last 14 years North Korea has been ranked by Open Doors USA as the country with the worst persecution in the world, beating out countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Eritrea. Recently, CSW released a report detailing the abuse experienced by North Korean Christians. The North Korean Regime is resistant to religions for their ability to organize and that there is an authority above the Kim family. Despite this, the church in North Korea continues to grow and Christian organizations continue to operate.

10/18/2016 North Korea (Christian Daily) – Christian churches in North Korea continue to grow despite more than 70 years of persecution from the government, according to a report.

In 1907, Korea’s then capital Pyongyang was branded as the “Jerusalem of the East” because of the vigor of Christian activities there. Persecution began in 1945 and extended until the 1980s as the ruling party tried to erase the Christian faith from North Korea. In the 1970s, the North Korean government announced that Christians were already nonexistent in the country.

Last month, Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) released a report about North Korea’s violation of its citizens’ freedom of religion or belief. According to the report, its people have suffered for decades as the Kim regime’s abuse of their rights continues to be unchecked.

CSW has voiced its concern over the human rights situation in North Korea. The group representative says some people are kept in prison camps, subjected to torture and inhuman treatment, arbitrarily detained, discriminated against, and forced to disappear.
