ICC Note: Boko Haram attacked the village of Toumour in Niger, where they killed five people and left many others injured. This is the first attack in three months carried out by the Islamist group in eastern Niger. The attack is part of the ongoing conflict between Boko Haram and the government since the jihadist fighters want to turn Africa into an Islamic state, but the government represents an obstacle for them. Additionally, Boko Haram has been behind several other attacks in nearby areas where they have targeted Christians directly as part of their mission to expand Islam.

9/6/2016, Niger (All Africa) – Five villagers were killed and two others wounded in an attack by suspected militants from the Islamist group Boko Haram in eastern Niger, officials said Saturday.

The attack took place Friday in the town of Tourmour, said Diffa border region governor Dan Dano Mahaman Laouali. He told Niger public radio the suspected militants rode on camels into the village of Toumour, killing and wounding townspeople and burning buildings before fleeing toward Nigeria.

The raid marks the first time in three months Boko Haram has carried out an attack in eastern Niger, though the Diffa region has been targeted numerous times by suspected militants in the past.
