ICC Note: A Muslim man in Nigeria is seeking a divorce from his wife of 24 years after he discovered that she secretly converted to Christianity. The man, Jamiu Adewunmi, stated that he cannot allow any other religion in his home except for his own – Islam. Christians often face persecution in Nigeria, usually at the hands of groups such as Boko Haram or the Fulani herders, but sometimes it comes from their friends and families. Christians who convert from Islam to Christianity in particular face severe persecution from their families who cast them out, or sometimes even kill them.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Jamiu Adewunmi had approached the Igando Customary Court, Lagos State for the dissolution of his 24-year-old marriage to Kehinde, his wife.

He alleged that Kehinde had converted to Christianity from Islam without his consent.

Mrs. Kehinde in her plea said, “Please court; help me beg him, where will I get a man at my age to marry me if my husband divorces me.
