Church in North Nigeria Attacked for ‘Friday’ Services
ICC Note: A mob of young radical Muslims attacked a Christian church on July 15 in Niger State, Nigeria, destroying everything inside of it. The reason that they gave for this act of violence was that the church had held a service on a Friday, the Muslim day of prayer. Christian churches, they argued, only have the right to worship on Sundays. The assailants reportedly beat up two men who were present at the church and chased away a group of women holding a prayer meeting. This is not the first act of violence towards Christians in Nigeria recently. There have been extrajudicial killings of Christians by Muslim mobs, and the Islamic terrorist group Boko Haram remains active in northeastern Nigeria, known for historically targeting Christians with violence..
