ICC Note: Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari claims that militant Islamist terror group Boko Haram no longer controls any Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nigeria. LGAs represent Nigeria’s equivalent to counties. Buhari’s bold assertion comes months after claiming erroneously that the terrorists are “technically defeated,” so the validity of his comments remain in question. Regardless Boko Haram remains a deadly threat. Just this week, two suicide bombers decimated Dikwa displacement camp near Maiduguri in northeast Nigeria, murdering nearly 60 people and maiming others.

2/12/16 Nigeria (AllAfrica) – President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said Boko Haram insurgents were no longer holding any local government area in the country, saying his administration had recaptured 14 local government areas previously controlled by the insurgents.

There had been conflicting reports that the insurgents were still controlling some local government areas in Borno State, with a senator representing Borno Central, Baba Garbai, saying the insurgents control about 50 percent of the state.
