Local man returns from mission to bring Christianity to North Korean defectors

ICC Note:

A Georgian paper describes the mission of a local man to bring Christ to North Korean defectors who describes the mission of a school specifically to help instruct those who defect from North Korea.

8/6/09 North Korea (Times-Georgian.com) Local resident Stephen Garner of Seoul USA recently returned from his summer mission trip to South Korea, where members of the ministry visited Underground University, as school that helps instruct refugees who defect from North Korea. According to Christian Web site, crosswalk.com, North Korea is suspected of detaining more political and religious prisoners than any other country in the world.

he training he assisted with at the school included about 10 lessons including, “History of the Persecuted Church,” “Theology of Persecution” and “Forgiveness and Conflict Resolution.” He also assisted with lessons on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder recovery, which Garner says is critical because most North Korean defectors suffer from harsh conditions, such as imprisonment due to their attempt to flee the country.
He said entering the country can also be a life-threatening venture, citing the capture of the two American journalists who recently entered the country, Laura Ling and Euna Lee. Though they were released just days ago, Garner says they’re fortunate because there’s a great chance Korean defectors won’t make it out alive and are often punished for celebrating the Christian faith.
According to the World Watch List 2009, North Korea was ranked one as the worst persecutors of Christians in the world. In addition, the country has topped the list for seven consecutive years due to the estimated 70,000 Christians believed to be currently imprisoned.
