03/30/2021 Syria (International Christian Concern) –  Following the papal visit to Iraq, Syrian Christians and church leaders expressed their desire and hope for a visit from Pope Francis as well. The historic trip to Iraq, marking the first time a pope has visited the country, sent a message of hope to the whole region.

Papal ambassador to Syria, Cardinal Mario Zenari said that Syria is far from being forgotten by Pope Francis, though circumstances do not allow him to travel currently to the country. Iraqi Christians faced years of persecution, violence and economic strife. Though they continue to experience many persecution issues, a visit from the pope hopefully marks a turning point in the country’s trajectory. The region as a whole, having experienced many of the same persecution and economic hardship, sees hope and peace in this one act.
