Armed attackers killed at least nine Christians, including a Nigerian soldier, in a devastating spree across Plateau state. The attackers also destroyed more than 40 hectares of farmland in just three days, according to local sources.

International Christian Concern (ICC) recorded the attacks spread across Mangu, Bassa, and Barkin Ladi local government areas, targeting Christian miners, commuters, and farming communities.

On April 30, gunmen attacked Sabon Gari (Yilpo) in Mangu Local Government Area, killing a youth miner, injuring two others, and abducting another resident. Local youth leader Nandom Ishaku said the victims were returning from mining when they were ambushed along the Aloghom–Yilpo–Mwansat College road.

Said Mathias Sohotden told ICC that eight civilians were killed in separate incidents within three days, alongside one soldier.

“A soldier was killed as a victim. In the past three days, our casualties have risen to eight, with one soldier, totaling nine,” he said.

He identified victims from attacks between April 30 and May 2 in Sabongari and Gana Daji as Kyenshak Inusa, 23; Nanfwang Obadiah, 34, a father of two; Moses Dakat, 50, a father of four; and Nanfwang Gabriel, 22. Others include Maryamu Doris, 45, a mother of four, and Yakubu Kyenshak Damter, 35, a father of two.

On May 2, in Bassa Local Government Area, the Miango Youths Development Association (MYDA) said Fulani Ethnic Militias destroyed more than 40 hectares of dry-season farms in Rehwiechio and Ancha communities, damaging crops valued at 200 million naira ($146,000).

“Our farmers … have now been left devastated,” MYDA stated, demanding government intervention and an immediate increase in security presence.

On May 3, gunmen struck Fan District in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where residents said five people were killed. Resident Bot James said the victims were walking home at about 9 p.m. when attackers opened fire, killing four at the scene. A fifth later died in the hospital.

Rwang Tengwong of the Berom Youth Moulders confirmed the killings and called for increased protection for residents.

Residents across affected areas are now reporting attacks on mining routes and farming communities, vital sources of income for many families. Local leaders are urgently calling for reinforced security deployments and thorough investigations into the escalating incidents.
