Disappearances in Syria Hinder Reconciliation

11/22/2018 Syria (International Christian Concern) –   Syria Direct reports that anyone connected to one of the opposition groups at some point during the Civil War is at an increased risk of disappearance by the government. This is in despite of opaque promises that the government will reconcile with rebel factions and forgive past anti-government activities.

While most Christian Background Believers permanently left Syria early on during the Civil War, there are still a significant number of Christian Syrians present in the region. Many are Muslim Background Believers who come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including a past which involved membership in an opposition group. MBB refugees are under increased pressure to return back to Syria, but both their new faith and past activities makes them especially vulnerable to violence.

Syria has been engaged in a violent Civil War since 2011. The complex, violent web of opposition and pro-government forces has hindered all attempts at restoring peace to the country. The amount of destruction is unprecedented. The government has made significant ground this year at recovering lost territories, but the question remains as to what Syria’s future will look like – and whether Christians will be able to live there.
