Cholera Outbreak adds to Chaos in South Sudan

The ongoing war in South Sudan has led to an increased number of displaced persons. This displacement is overcrowding cities and causing a mass outbreak of cholera. The outbreak is reported to have claimed 60 lives in the last month alone. Cholera is a sickness caused mainly by contaminated water or food and claims more than 30,000 lives annually. South Sudan has struggled with it since its independence in 2011. Many of these displaced people are Christian fleeing Sudan’s totalitarian, Islamic regime.
06/30/2017 South Sudan (AllAfrica) – A cholera outbreak in South Sudan’s Namurunynag State in Eastern Equatoria has killed more than 60 people in one month, local Governor Louse Lobong Lojore said.
Mr Lojore said the death toll could be higher as some occurred in remote locations and went unrecorded.
He told a Juba-based radio station on Tuesday that the first case was reported early last month, and many more were still being reported in several parts of the state.
“Of course, these are cases that we were able to reach but there are some in very remote areas where we are not able to access and get the data,” Mr Lojore said.
