US Citizen Detained in North Korea

A US Citizen working in North Korea named Tony Kim has been detained. Tony Kim taught accounting at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), a university that was largely funded by evangelical Christians. He was also involved in running orphanages in North Korea. He was detained at the airport while trying to leave the country. PUST teaches on controversial topics such as capitalism and hosts many volunteer professors who are Christians. North Korea has detained American citizens to use as bargaining chips with the United States. North Korea also heavily suppresses Christianity and those who would attempt to spread Christianity in North Korea.

4/24/2017 North Korea (AOL News) – North Korea detained a U.S. citizen on Friday as he attempted to leave the country, bringing the total number of Americans held by the isolated country to three.

Korean-American Tony Kim had spent a month teaching an accounting course at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), the university’s chancellor, Chan-Mo Park, told Reuters on Sunday.

Kim, who also goes by his Korean name Kim Sang-duk and is in his fifties, was detained by North Korean officials at Pyongyang International Airport as he attempted to leave the country, Park said.
