ICC Note:

China has now formally detained two South Korean pastors accused of helping North Korean defectors enter into China. The two pastors were arrested with their wives in February. The wives have since been released but the husbands remain in custody and it seems like they will be heading to trial soon. China and South Korea are at heightened tension due to a missile defense system the US has installed in South Korea. China has been cracking down not only on Christians among their own citizens, but also foreigner missionaries, especially those that are working to help North Koreans.

4/6/2017 China (Radio Free Asia) – Authorities in the northeastern Chinese province of Liaoning have formally arrested two South Korean Protestant pastors accused of trying to help North Koreans flee across the border into China.

The arrests come amid rising tensions between South Korea and China over Seoul’s deployment of a U.S.-made missile defense system that China says will affect the regional balance of power.

Neither pastor has been named. One was arrested along with his wife in February as they tried to board a plane for South Korea from Qingdao in the eastern province of Shandong, while the second was detained at a hotel in the northeastern city of Qinhuangdao.
