ICC Note:
A human rights lawyer who defended Christians has been subjected to torture while in detainment. The lawyer of Xie Yang filed a complaint over his treatment while in detention. The report says that Xie was hung from the ceiling using a practice called a “hanging chair” for hours at a time; he was beaten; deprived of sleep, food, and water; and death threats were made against his family. At one point when he feared he was about to die he demanded medical attention, at which point an officer came and beat him more. China has taken to torturing Christians and human rights activists to extract confessions for false charges. This seems to be part of a policy to silence or remove anyone who could question the states authority, or appeal to any sort of authority outside the state.
1/25/2017 China (Radio Free Asia) – A rights group on Tuesday called for the immediate release of detained Chinese rights lawyer Xie Yang, detailing his lawyers’ reports of his torture in a police-run detention center in the central province of Hunan.
Xie was subjected to confinement in a “hanging chair” made of plastic chairs stacked high above the ground for hours at a time, so that his legs swelled up and he was in excruciating pain, he told his lawyers.
He was also deprived of sleep and repeatedly beaten, humiliated, and taunted with death threats against his family, CHRD cited his lawyers’ notes as saying.
Xie’s lawyer Liu Zhengqing confirmed to RFA that he had filed a formal complaint on his client’s behalf over his treatment in detention, but declined to comment further.
