Church Leaders in India Call on Government to Not Celebrate Good Governance Day

A church committee in India called on its state government to not observe Good Governance Day on December 25th. In 2014, the current BJP-led government declared December 25th as Good Governance Day, a declaration many Christians in India felt was directed at their community. Since 2014, Christians across India have felt that Good Governance Day is an attempt by the government to cover up Christmas. Will Christians in India be able to move Good Governance Day?
12/23/2016 India (The Indian Express) – The Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a conglomerate of leaders of 14 major churches in Mizoram, Thursday appealed to the state government not to observe ‘Good Governance Day’ on Christmas. The Centre’s decision to observe ‘Good Governance Day’ on December 25 is one of the most important religious day of Christians, according to a statement issued by the committee.
“It is extremely unfortunate that the Centre declared December 25 as ‘Good Governance Day’ which will surely inconvenience many people and disturb Christmas day celebrations,” it said.
The MKHC has understood that December 25 is declared as ‘Good Governance Day’ as it coincides with the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the statement said, adding it is a sacred day for the Christians.
