In a note of congratulations, persecuted Christians in India have called on President-elect Trump to promote religious freedom and remember the suffering of Christians around the world. It is yet to be seen what foreign policy President-elect Trump will prioritize, but persecuted Christians around the world are hoping religious freedom will be at the forefront. Christians in India have faced increasing numbers of attacks on their communities. Many claim this trend coincides with the rise of the Hindu nationalist BJP to India’s central government. Will President-elect Trump prioritize religious freedom? 

11/14/2016 India (Asia News) – Donald Trump “hopefully will herald a new era in uplifting human spirit and promoting freedom of conscience,” says the Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) in a congratulatory message to the new president of the United States of America.

In the message, signed by President Sajan K George, the Council wished the newly elected president “great success”.

According to the Christian leader, “The United States always has been a beacon of hope for the oppressed and persecuted people around the world.”

The “GCIC also hopes a Trump presidency would not fall prey to the special interests that tend to promote regional wars at the expense of innocent people, especially minorities, including Christians, as we have witnessed in the case of Syria.”

“Christians around the world are living in perilous times,” Sajan K George notes. “Whether it is from the Hindutva extremists in India, Islamic radicals in Middle East, North Africa, and Pakistan, Intolerant Buddhists in Myanmar or Sri Lanka, Christianity has become the major target of scorn, prejudice, abuse and persecution.”
