Nepal Christians Face Trial in Religious Freedom Case
ICC Note: Eight Christians in Nepal are now facing trial in a religious freedom case, the first since the institution of a new constitution that outlaws evangelization of any kind. with the defendants face charges for trying to convert children to Christianity. They were initially arrested after they were found distributing pamphlets about Jesus in a Christian school for the purpose of trauma counselling at a pastor’s invitation. Some of the students at the Christian school follow other faiths, which brings about the charges. Christians in Nepal are facing increasing persecution as the country’s laws continue to tighten around religious freedom.
07/22/2016, Nepal (WorldWatch Monitor) – Nepal’s first religious freedom case since the country’s new constitution was implemented in 2015 is due to come to trial later this week.
Facing charges will be eight Christian counsellors arrested for distributing a pamphlet about Jesus in a Christian school while helping children through the trauma of last year’s earthquake.
Anything perceived as evangelizing is outlawed in the new constitution.
The seven men and one woman arrested June 9 were charged with trying to convert children to Christianity by distributing the pamphlet during a trauma seminar.
