Orissa Violence: Christian Leaders Seek President's Help

Christian leaders have appealed President Pratibha Patil, seeking her help in protecting the Christian community and their properties in Orissa. They have sought the help of the Army or Central forces to protect Christians in Orissa as “nun is raped, priests are injured, churches and offices are burnt in the presence of the police”.

ICC has learned from sources within Orissa that anti-Christian violence continues with little to no response from the government. According to ICC sources inside Orissa, 150 houses and 20 churches have been destroyed while some groups are reporting as many as 300 houses and churches destroyed. ICC sources indicate that most places are without curfew in contradiction to the government’s claims

Many of these Iraqi Christians are forced to live in countries where they can’t work and send their children to school. Though the Nigerian Muslims argue that Sharia law doesn’t affect Christians, this argument doesn’t hold water. USCIRF has issued a report on Vietnam that includes the findings of the Commission's trip to Vietnam in 2007 and highlights government-sponsored abuse and repression of religious communities. In light of their findings, the report calls on the U.S. State Department to re-designate the country as a "country of particular concern."

Philippine Government to Ask Rebels to Disarm

The Philippine government is calling for Muslim guerrillas to disarm when peace talks resume to prevent further attacks once an agreement is signed, but the guerrillas have said that they will not disarm until they see a signed peace pact being successfully enforced. Anything else, they say, is surrender.
