| Children aided during ICC's most recent mission to Sudan |
In addition, since the cease-fire was signed for the Nuba mountain area, the GOS has removed most of its troops and have deployed them in the Upper Nile region, stepping up the scope of attacks.
This is the dry season in Sudan. The people have little access to food and water during this time. Therefore, the GOS significantly steps up their war efforts against the innocent men, women and children of southern Sudan in order to wipe them out.
The next morning the ICC team was scheduled to depart Sudan. Around 11:10 am we heard what sounded like the loudest thunder claps we've ever heard. Asking what this was, we were informed it was the rockets from the helicopter gunship attacking. Our fear is that this was yet another attack on a civilian target. It brought home the reality of what these innocent people have to live through all too frequently. Once again God intervened and kept us under His protection. The prayers of many people were answered that morning. Had our plane been on schedule, the gunship would have undoubtedly seen it in the air or on the ground. It's no question what would have happened.
Additionally, the GOS has increased the number of "no-fly zones" to the point the UN is balking. This is a first. In a UN press release they actually state the fact that the GOS has imposed additional barriers by demanding maps and coordinates of locations, which are to receive the aid from the United Nations.
ICC is planning another trip into the "no-fly zones" in the very near future. We will be delivering food and other items people desperately need. As in the past, our policy is to personally distribute the food to the people who actually need it. Now many of the displaced people have to survive on grass and leaves and live under trees and bushes. It is crucial for us to get the aid in before the rains move in beginning in early June. In addition to the aid we are planning on delivering Bibles, medical kits and pastors' kits containing pens, notebooks, and training materials. If you or your organization would like to help please contact ICC.
Please note: ICC's Sudan Project has changed names from Total Redemption to Hand of Hope. It is still the same project, designed to bring aid and hope to our brothers and sisters in southern Sudan. The name change was implemented because some people mistakenly thought that ICC was participating in slave redemptions. This is not the case. Any questions about this project can be directed to the ICC office at 1-800-ICC-5441 or by e-mailing icc@persecution.org.
PLEASE PROVIDE HELP AND HOPE TO THE PEOPLE OF
SOUTHERN SUDAN!
WE CAN'T COUNT ON THE U.N. TO HELP.

Updates From Around the WorldIndonesia: On April 28th, at least 12 people were murdered by Islamic extremists in Soya village, near Ambon, in Maluku. The attack came only days after Laskar Jihad leader Jafar Umar Thalib called for Muslims to "wage war against the Christians." Jafar was arrested on May 4 on charges of provoking violence and continues to be held in Jakarta, where he has received visits from Vice President Hamzah Haz. The situation in Ambon is extremely tense. Pakistan: ICC has been following the case of 8 Christian women who were gang-raped by Muslim co-workers in May of 2000. On May 15, 2002 a judge in Feroze Wala determined that the rape charges could not be proved despite eye-witness testimony and medical reports confirming the rape. Three of the accused men were sentenced to 2 years imprisonment and a fine of $200 on weapons charges. Three other men were released on their own recognizance. Islamic extremists in the courtroom expressed their joy at the verdict, saying "We scored a victory from the infidels." The women plan to appeal to a higher court. Meanwhile, they are living in fear of retaliation from the men, who will be released any day, having already spent 2 years in prison since their initial arrest. Saudi Arabia: During May, ICC received reports of more arrests in Jeddah, the same area where 14 Christians were previously imprisoned and deported. Ten people were arrested from an Ethiopian house church on May 10th, including six women. Another woman, arrested the next day, has already been deported. ICC sources confirm that at least two of the men were beaten in the chest for half an hour at the Breman Deportation Center. As usual, charges are unknown and all are expected to be deported. |
